An Exercise in Descriptive Writing

Gather your tools. Read the prompt.

Choose any live-action movie or show to watch on mute and without closed captions. As you watch, pay close attention to how the characters communicate their emotions through facial expressions and body language. Write down your observations and identify how they are feeling.

Then, review your notes to determine whether any character in your story shares the emotions you identified but lacks the expression. This exercise will build your ability to observe and describe nonverbal communication so you can use those details in your writing.
